Why is it called Strawberry Festival?
Strawberries were once big business on Vashon. Commercial producers boomed throughout the 1900s until the late 1970s. To celebrate their love for strawberries, people on the island started the Strawberry Festival in 1909, and in 1912 decided to create an annual event. Today, though strawberry production is now almost exclusive to home gardeners, we still celebrate our heritage and our beloved strawberry.
Learn more about the history of commercial strawberry production on Vashon, and the indelible contributions of the Mukai family that transformed our island and the industry here.
